Legal Blogs

IP blogs

Informative, accessible blogs written by specialists who know their legal IP onions. A great way of keeping up to date on developments and case law if you're not in a law firm and don't have access to the very expensive professional update services.  You can also subscribe to each of the blog's regular email updates.  UK and EU focussed but also analysis of international developments.

IPKat   Covers all aspects of Intellectual Property

1709   Particularly focussed on copyright

The Fashion Law  Fashion law and business analysis. The reference section is updated regularly and useful regarding US case law, particularly for design and trademarks (with a fashion law edge)

Technollama Cyber law / technology law blog. Oh - and Llamas.  Curious how AI may or may not disrupt traditional copyright concepts? This is your blog.

Non IP blogs

UK Human Rights Blog  Consistently fascinating, current law blog focussing on Human Rights and related law.  A fantastic resource regarding judicial review. They also produce a podcast.

Art, Photography, Cultural Stuff

Public Domain Review  A really rather wonderful, constantly evolving, curated site/journal of public domain images.  It's a cabinet of curiosities, with works covering the history of art, literature, science and beyond.  There's a free fortnightly newsletter that you can sign up for, and their instagram account is always a marvel.

In-Public  Wonderful site dedicated to street photography.

Royal Academy  Whilst many of the national galleries and museums publish articles and research, what I love about the RA site is that, even on the home page,it delivers regularly updated, engaging content that is really accessible.

Tate  An amazing collection of British and International art available to view online and an amazing cultural and educational resource.  You can also create your own personal 'curated' collections.  Delve into 'sketches and letters' to explore the world's largest archive of British art and artists.  Over 53,000 items have been digitised from the archive (I'm biased of course, I cleared all of these!) - from the wonderful love letters of Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell, through the moving diaries and sketches of Keith Vaughan and Donald Rodney's sketch books.  If you're into cats and artists then search for Ben Nicholson and cats - he loved his big ginger tomcat Tommy.

The Conversation  An independent news publisher founded by a number of UK universities which provides journalistic articles sourced from the academic and research community, edited by in-house staff and delivered direct to the public.

Podcasts for the curious

I adore podcasts - the best are like having old and incredible friends bringing news, stories and gossip to your door.

Kermode and Mayo's Take Hello to Jason Isaacs!  If you know what that greeting references then ‘welcome fellow wittertainee’ and perhaps 'vanguardista'! If you don’t then check out this wonderful podcast. Two friends bickering as only old friends can about film.

We Have Ways of Making You Talk Second World War waffle with Al Murray and James Holland.  Even if you think war history chat isn't your thing, this podcast may change your mind.   Start with the week long special about Dunkirk and see if you're not hooked!

The Rest is History  Two world class historians (Dominic Sandbrook and Tom Holland) and some amazing guests discussing everything from ancient history to the World Cup.  If, like me, history at school wasn't your thing, this pod may change your mind.

Revisionist History Malcolm Gladwell's always entertaining, erudite podcast, journeying through the overlooked and misunderstood.  The episode  (A Good Walk Spoiled) on how tax and golf in the US are interlinked, via the Ship of Theseus theory illustrates the fantastic breadth of stories and thoughts.   The episode about why Elvis had issues singing some of his lyrics is incredibly moving (Analysis, Parapraxis, Elvis).

This American Life  Podcast bliss.  Every week the Daddy or Mommy (because this is from Chicago Public Radio) of all podcasts delivers incredible stories based around a particular theme.  Ira Glass, the show’s Executive Producer is a DUDE. I’ve listened to this podcast so much that I jumped with joy when I recognised a beer by Laguinitas ‘putting the pub back in public radio’ when I was in New York, purely on the back of that company sponsoring the show and hearing their ad at the end each week delivered by Mr Glass.

You Must Remember This Tales from Old Hollywood - but like you've never heard before.  Carina Longworth has proper film historian and critical chops.
